Have a production server running Server 2003 Std. SP2. Symantec BUE 12.5 is installed on this server and it requires SQL Express 2005. The GDR 4053 for SQL Database Services is also installed as a sub-set to the SQL Express program.

I noticed an "msinstaller" error in the Application Event log. It is specific to SQL Express 2005 and reads as follows:

Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition -- Error 29565. SQL Server Setup cannot upgrade the specified instance because the previous upgrade did not complete. Start the Remote Registry service and go to Add/Remove Programs, select the Change button for Microsoft SQL Server 2005, and then select SQL instance BKUPEXEC and complete the setup.

When I attempted to perform the recommended task indicated in the event error above, SQL Express definitely indicates that the installation is incomplete and looks for the sqlrun_sql.msi file to complete the installation, but it is missing from the server. I did a complete search and it is gone.

How can I repair this installation and is it possible to do so without completely ininstalling the current installation? I am concerned that if I have to uninstall SQL Express, this may create all kinds of problems for Symantec Backup Express and other applications that use SQL Express.

These programs all work properly, so I am not convinced that the installation is really incomplete, but rather, perhaps an MS critical update to SQL Express may have actually caused this problem.

Thanks for any guidance concerning this.

Chuck
