I have a database of 30 GB and the free avail. space is around 15 GB in MDF file. The system is running short of data drive space, and I believe I should shrink the db mdf file to free the space. Any comments, suggestions on my approach.

Thanks in advance.

DBCC SHRINKFILE(1)

You might want to run it 2 or 3 times consecutively.

The shrinkfile does not always shrink to the maximum available on the first run. Look at the size of the file each time after you run it. You'll see what I'm talking about.
