Can anyone tell me (where I can find) the method by which I can script (in dos) the stopping / restarting of a SQL instance that is part of a cluster?

Will this prevent the clustered instance from failing over?

You should not be stopping the clustered services using NET STOP or starting them using NET START. They should be done in the Cluster Administrator. If you don't want them to fail over to the other node, perform a Take Offline. I have not seen anything scripted from Cluster Administrator.

If you can use vb script, you can write scripts to "expose a complete cluster management interface." From this you should be able to do what you would like in Cluster Admin, and still call the vbscript from dos.

For reference:

I'm with Tara on this one. When working with clustered resources ALWAYS manipulate them through Cluster Administrator. Net Stop might work, but I bet that it fails over to the other node.

I use this command:

cluster /CLUSTER:<CLS NAME> RES "<SERVICE NAME>" /OFF

In fact we use a full menu commands script

the cluster.exe is on your server machine and with /? you get all the help yo need.

Regards.
