Is the MSSQLSERVER service started before you try to connect? It probably isn't. You've got the option turned on to start the service if you try to connect to it. So it's having to start it first, then allow you to connect. So just set the service to startup automatically in the Services Applet in Control Panel (in Admin Tools).

MSSQLSERVER loads automatically therefore it should not be a problem.the performance is slow when i try to open a database or i try to open a table or alter a table. it takes almost one minute to open the database or table or make changes.

How much RAM do you have? Do you have any other big apps running on there?

i got 256 Mb SD Ram and no other application running. i just got Visual studio and visual studio.net installed in my machine.

Iam expecting that you are using high configuraion machine.
visul studio it self is very slow , but can you tell me , how slow your machine is..? You can stop the unneccesary services. Free you primary partition, temp files, and log files ..

This might also be caused by Authentication configuration errors.

Make sure you are running EM from the SQL Server SP2 client (at least.. don't know if SP3 included EM)

Look at the SQL Log. Also change the default protocol to Named Pipes and see if that helps.

Is the database set to AUTOCLOSE? That would make it slow to connect.

In enterprise manager right click the database and choose PROPERTIES then [Options] tab; there is a checkbox "Auto close" which should be UNchecked.
