[SQLServer Standard Edition,sp2 on Windows 2000 server]
Hi Everyone,
When i try to Install SP3a on a Default Instance iam getting this error:

Setup was unable to verify the state of the server for an Upgrade. Verify the server is able to start and that you provided a valid SA password.

I have provided the Valid SA password.

I guess that osql cant able to verify/validate the server?maybe have to install lastest MDAC?

thanks in advance

Cindy

Have you tried restarting the installation since you got this error? Also, you might want to set the sa password to blank and try it that way.

I forgot to mention, i have another instance(sql 2000) running on the same server, i installed sp3a on that one.
Does it affect the sp3a installation in any way?

I restarted the server twice but I will try with Blank SA password.

thanks

I can think of a couple of other things to check:

1. I had a problem with installing a service pack and it was caused by an alias that was in place on the server. Check the SQL client network util (cliconfg from the run command) on this box to see if you have a named pipes alias setup for this instance. If you do, get rid of it and try the upgrade again.

2. Check to see if the user configured to start the MSSQLSERVER service is still valid on the machine. Does it match the user from the other instance you are running? Is this user a local admin?

Looking at the logfile you posted it appears that you are able to successfully down the instance, but starting it fails. Here is a similar error (1053) but it is specific to SQL Agent. Maybe it pertains to your situation somehow. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322140&Product=sql2k

Ok Tried yesterday with Blank SA password but still same error.
EC, have checked everything with the instance of the server.
there is no Alias in the Clicnfg.

But everything is same except the Server Network Utility.
Named Pipes is enabled in default and disabled in NamedInstance

Will try to disable it and try to install

thanks guys

I was having the same problem and was able to successfully install SP3a by doing the following.

-- Change MSSQL Server service to start manually
-- Change Distributed Transaction Coordinator service to start manually.
-- Reboot the server
-- Run the SQL Server SP3a installation program (I received an error when logging into the service, but the installation continued without a problem. The error said something about the server not being started. I beleive it was just a timing issue)
-- Change the MSSQL Server service and Distributed Transaction Coordinator services back to "Automatic" startup.
-- Reboot server

Hopefully this works for you the same as it did for me.
