Our app connects to sql only through windows authentication. Now what minimum windows user rights should a dba have. All database objects are also given DBO rights only.

A DBA should have sysadmin fixed server role inside SQL Server and local admin privileges on the server.

Windows Authentication is more secure and easier to manage. There are times when you unfortunately have to use SQL Authentication. It should only be used when absolutely necessary. You can search www.microsoft.com and www.sqlsecurity.com for more information on why it's more secure. Cisco and Microsoft also publish white papers on secure architecture that you should consider studying.

Yes with Novell you wouldn't be able to use Windows authentication. But if you are in a Windows environment, the best security approach is Windows authentication.
