Folks,we have a customer who has purchased a windows server with 8GB RAM and 4 CPUs. He wants to install enterprise edition as he wants to address > 2GB RAM. However, he cannot afford to license all processors. He has asked can he license just one processor. What do people think about this? What are the implications and also the implications of upgrading the licensing to > 1 processor at a later stage?TIASandra

According to MS, you are not allowed to only license one processor if the server has more than one. Even if you only tell SQL Server to use the one, you still have to license all of them as the OS is still able to access the other cpus. But does he need to license per cpu? Is this a web environment? If it isn't, then he might be able to just purchase one server license, then individual cals.Tara

you'll have to disable SQL server from using CPUs that you have not purchased licensing for.EDIT:I think this is a recent change to their licensing due to the use of vmware and ms virtual server products.-ec

My response is directly from MS. Perhaps the answer was different 2 years ago.Tara Kizer
