| Dutch writes "I am a neophyte so be gentle...I have been using SQL Server 7.0 for a couple of years, hosting my databases with an ISP so that I can interact with them over the internet. I recently needed to set up another database and decided to look at SQL Server 2000, also maintained by an ISP. I downloaded an evaluation version of Enterprise Manager 2000 to interface with the new database. When I connect to the SQL 2000 server using EM2000, and then click on the databases folder, my client PC starts to receive a large amount of data, about 4MB. I don't even have much data in the new database, just about 4.5MB, counting all the overhead.I then tried to connect to a SQL Server 7.0 database using EM2000 (the EM2000 install overwrote my EM7). Same thing, even worse. After I connected to the server and clicked on the databases folder, the PC had to receive almost 20MB before I could even get to my database. This database is about 30MB in size. I live in the boonies where my poor old 56K modem is the best available connection and it only connects at about 30K. Having to wait for 20MB of data to download before I can select a database is tedious, at best.I did not experience large downloads connecting to the SQL 7 database using my old EM7.What's going on and what am I doing wrong? Am I actually downloading data from the database but don't know it? Is there some settings to try? I've looked at the Books Online and perused this site but to no avail. Many thanks. Dutch" |
