I am having problems with a machine not getting a connection to my server...
I can ping and run tracert but my co-worker can not ping the machine this seems to be an intermitant problem.

Any suggestions for tracing the problem

low tech answer. Have you checked the cable that connects this user to the network? If pair 3-6 is bad the user can often get a link light but will have intermitant connectivity. Also check the port of the switch they are connecting through.

If you can't ping it, then there's nothing from SQL Server that we can do to help. And a network sniffer would help you trace the problems. Hardware ones are expensive but there are some cheap software versions out there. I've never had to use either though as we have network admins responsible for this kind of thing, so I wouldn't be able to help you out.
