Jack writes "My employer recently upgraded our machines from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. Since the upgrade we have been having difficulty connecting or staying connected to SQL Server 2000. Prior to the upgrade things worked fine. I suspect changes by XP have caused this. The problem is only on the machine that connect remotely. The machines that connect locally (the ones that are in the same office as the server)are not experiencing the same problem."

Were the machines that connect locally also upgraded to XP at the same time as the remote ones?

What is SQL Server 2000 running on? Hopefully a dedicated server running a Server version of Windows (this is typical). If the Windows XP upgrade included SP2, the built-in firewall might be causing some problems in not letting you out. There are options to configure it to allow certain applications out. I run XP just fine, so it's not a major issue, likely just a configuration issue.
