| We need to give ourselves a little more flexibility in our disaster recovery module. We are considering creating a SQL server Cluster with one server connected via VPN (T1 to Cable modem)Any Pitfalls, problems or thoughts.JimUsers <> Logic |

Have you looked at the physical requirements for a cluster? You have to have a disk that is physically shared between the servers, so I don't see how you could do this over VPN.You should look into log shipping. Also, a cable modem is not a good medium for this application if it is a regular home connection, because the data transfer rate is asymmetrical. This means you can download very fast, but your upload speed is very limited. Example: 2.5 MB/Sec down vs. 0.3 MB/Sec up.quote: Originally posted by JimL We need to give ourselves a little more flexibility in our disaster recovery module. | Jim, I really don't reccomend doing such. Log Shipping is probably the way to go here. I think what you want can be done, but you need a better link to make it happen methinks. If you think about it, when you fail over to the cable modem, you'll be limited to about 256Kbps of IO to your storage system. You might as well be down at that sloooooow rate. Getting a 100Mbps+ between two places is quite expensive, depending on the distance. If it;s just a few miles, not bad. If it's thousands of miles, yer talking $50K a month. I've been down this road recently, and I suggest exploring other options. This option is expensive to do right.Michael<Yoda>Use the Search page you must. Find the answer you will.</Yoda> |
