The SQL server doesn't compress, but it will remove database freespace so you're backup file may be smaller.

If you want the backups compressed while they are being created, you can use SQL Litespeed, third party tool. We use this on our servers that have very large databases, 100GB or so.Tara

Tara,I checked this out for myself and it seems like a 'pay for itself' deal. Have you ever had to restore a DB that was compressed with this utility? Any issues? |

Yes I have. And the time that it takes to restore it is greater than what it would take to restore a SQL Server backup file. The file size of the compressed file for us is around 10-25% of the SQL Server backup file. The time it takes to back them up is much much faster also. But the restore time takes considerably longer. So you have to weigh your options here.Tara

Sometimes the restores don't take considerably longer. We've actually found the restore times comparable on all our databases. The only exception is where you have a lot of images or binaries in the database. They don't compress well with any of the compression utilities out there. They are slow to backup and restore. Out of curiousity, what version of Litespeed are you on now Tara?MeanOldDBAderrickleggett@hotmail.comWhen life gives you a lemon, fire the DBA.
