Morning all

Last week, I asked a question on how to go about testing our RAID config, and I was recommended to simply disconnect one of the hard drives.

However, I was wondering what I should expect to happen. Although I am aware that if a disk failure occurs, we can hot swap it for another disk whilst still online. However, whilst a disk has not been replaced, is the server still operational? If so, how can a RAID 10 config still be operational if one of the mirrored disks is no longer present, or is the server offline until the damaged disk is replaced?

Thanks in advance

With one disk out it should continue to work, otherwise there is a hard fault of somesort!

I would want to see what the "Alert" system was when that happened - e.g. that an Email went to IT or somesuch.

Hi Kristen,

Thanks for your reply. With regards to 'Alerts', is that something I would set up myself? If so, how do I go about it?

Do you not have a system administrator? If so, they would be the one to set it up. Hopefully, they would have a service on the box like HP Insight Manager or be using a tool like MOM to alert them about things like this.

On RAID 10, there will be a slight degradation in performance; however, it's not even close to the performance degradation you would get from losing a RAID 5 array disk. Find out if the disk subsystem has a hot spare. If it does, that should automatically pick up for the missing drive. When you replace it with a new drive, it will rebuild the new drive and switch with the hot spare when completed.

Unfortunately, we don't have a hot spare. And as for the System administrator, I am not sure what tools they have in place, but this is something I shall query with them!

Thanks for the advice!

You will still be fine on RAID 10 pulling a drive. It's the most redundant of frequently used arrays out there.

Well, it really depends on WHICH two drives you pull, but most folks don't understand how exactly things are setup enough to know which two disks. So, I always say pull one, but not two disks.

lol

I wasn't recommending he pull two disks. Theoretically though, you could lose quite a bit more, especially on really large RAID 10 arrays.

To cover my back, I am leaving it to operations to actually do the pulling out of the drive, so as they set it up, they should know which ones to pull (in theory). But I think just the one will do, just to be on the safe side!

Well you also need to do a Fire Drill on the tape backups, don't you?!

Go on ... pull them all out !!!

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a friend do a simulated catastrophic failure only to find out he had a bad batch of tapes and his last 3 days were F.U.B.A.R.
You see he had saved time by removing the tapes verify from his backup.
