How do you compare SAN drive vs local drive on a 32 bit server?

Is it good idea to move my DB files to a SAN instead of local?

This Q is too broad.

In the disk world, it's just a matter of how much data can be read / written to the storage per time unit.

We need specs on how the local disks + SAN are configured in order to give you any answer.

Generally a SAN is good because generally it is more fail safe ... generally ...
Generally a SAN is good for read because it has a cache ... generally ...
Generally for write operations the only thing that matters is the RAID configuration and speed of disks ... generally ...

here is a good resource for answering this kind of question. There is SQL code that you can run that will help you benchmark various disk configs. The consensus is really that direct-attach disk is the fastest when you use the absolute fastest drives available and several SCSI adapters. This kind of config (as described in the thread linked below) is more complex than a typical SAN config (for the most part), so YMMV. But, if you need the absolute fastest config, this is the way to go.

Microsoft has a little utility called SQLIO that you can use to monitor disk performance. It will let you compare local drive throughput to SAN throughput. A Google search should find it quickly.
