I downloaded the sp2a from MS website.
However after running the SP it shows version 9.00.3042.00
When I applied the KB933508 it brings up the version as
9.00.3050.00

Is there a problem.
Per this site, some time ago, the version we need to be on ideally, is 9.00.3042.01

In which case which patch do I need to download and apply?

You need to apply GDR2 which is the critical hotfix for sp2 and sp2a. Your version should be 3054 after you apply GDR2.

Here is some information:

I will be installing this on a active/passive cluster.
any thing that I need to know.
I have successfully installed it on three stand alone machines.

Thanks for that Tara. I had no idea that it was quite such a minefield.

On clusters, you need to apply the service pack to each node so that the client tools get updated as well. So run it from one node and have it apply it to all instances plus the tools, then run it again on the other node and have it apply it to the tools there. You actually won't need to select anything during each installation as it knows what it needs to update.

it is failing on SQL Server Database Services and Analysis Service SP2 upgrade. It successfully did rest of them.
First I had logged in as a local admin on node1, that failed, now I used the Domain Account, the SQLServer Service Account to log into it and rerun the sp2 install. It still fails.

You'll need to check the logs to see why it is failing. We certainly can't help without the error from them. I believe it should have told you which file the error would be in.

Here's part of the path:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG

You don't need to switch accounts. You just need to run it with a domain account that has local admin privileges.

We need to see the error in the logs in order to help. We can't make any suggestions as to what to try until we see the errors.

yep I did use the Domain Service Account. which is a local and domain admin.
This is the error:
"MSP Error: 1920 Service 'SQLWriter' (SQL Writer) failed to start"

There is a posting on MSDN, it says that somehow during the SP1 install SQL Writer service gets uninstalled, this is what creates the problem.
If you browse through to the CD there is a file called SqlWriter.msi. Just install it, start the service and it works. This was a huge gotcha...
and...it did not let me install the hotfix on the passive node.

That is highly not recommended. Service accounts should not be domain admins.
