Microsoft is making a series of announcements at Tech*Ed related to SQL
Server 2008 -- previously codenamed "Katmai". I've got some details on some
of the new features including the MERGE statement, Table Valued Parameters,
Change Data Capture and the Declarative Management Framework. There should
also be a download of the June CTP available inside Connect.

What will we then do with all our CSV-table split functions?

Keep them in store for backward-compatibility (near future legacy apps)

Has that been un-NDA'd?

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

CDC is gonna save me some serious time if it works properly.

I have a feeling I'm going to see some pretty bad coding by others in future - now that Table Valued Parameters (TVP) are coming in. Could be used as a shortcut to understanding set-based thinking. But those same people do other bad things too, so I guess that's not a good reason to not allow TVPs

So should we just skip over 2k5 and wait for 2k8 and stay on 2k for as long as possible?

think of 2k8 as an upgrade to 2k5.
like 2k was to 7.0

If you are confident on the shipping dates, and have not yet started a (lets say "lengthy") QA for migration the answer has to be Yes ...

I think the really prudent thing would be to wait for SQL 2KA.

(I figure they're numbering these things in hex.)

Support for 2000 SP3a seems to be ending pretty soon...

http://blogs.gotdotnet.com/sqlreleaseservices/archive/2007/07/02/end-of-support-for-sql-server-2000-service-pack-3a.aspx

http://blogs.gotdotnet.com/sqlreleaseservices/archive/2007/07/12/sql-server-support-lifetimes-customer-actions.aspx

so we can't hang on to 2000 for long.
