Can anyone advise me on what they regard as the best SQL Server documentation tool. I am currently looking at Redgate and ApexSQL products. Do any of you have experience with these or others? I need one that will document 2000 and 2005 databases.

Thanks.

Thanks Kristen,

Have you or anyone had any experience with Redgate and/or ApexSQL tools. My company are looking to purchase some tools and obviously want a familiar name.

I humbly suggest you try redgate, apexsql, and any others you may have heard of (see my sig) and pick the one you like the best.

Personally no, not at all, but as I stated I am not paying for them so I have to go with my company's wishes. They have quite clearly stated that they want a recognisable name, supposedly for after sale support.

Jezemine, your product looks very, very good and I am sure it would give either of the other two a run for their money. If my comments offended you in any way please accept my apologies, it was not intended. But alas, companies never change , and mine is no different. They want a recognisable name and have quite clearly quoted Redgate and ApexSQL. It would appear that not many of you have used their documentation tools. I was just after some feedback that's all.

I think you'll many (most?) of the "locals" here use jezemine's tools. Can't speak for the rest, although I have tried other RedGate tools and they were fine. Never had to use their Support.

Would any of the Database Designer tools do you? (Not quite sure what scope your need when you say "documentation"). Plenty of expensive names in that field!

Pity Cartier or Rolex don't make Database Documentation tools otherwise you would be sorted!!!

Problem being that it were made by Cartier or Rolex I would never be 100% sure that I had bought a legitimate version or a very good copy.

I give very good support for SqlSpec, and what's more support is free. If you find a bug, I usually have a fix within a day or two. Also I implement new features for customers all the time.

I'm not offended at all. However, just because a company is well known doesn't mean the support will be good. Also, even if I am not as well known as those guys, I do have some big clients: Intel, McAfee, US Dept of State, for example.

Today, I was due to demo Redgate and ApexSQL doc tools to my boss. I included SQLSpec without informing my boss before-hand and demo'd it last out of the three. My boss was blown away and preffered it over the other two. I need to raise a purchase order tomorrow and will be buying some licences.

Thanks guys.

thanks very much for sneaking me into the competition in front of your boss!

it's always nice to be judged on merits instead of the size of an advertising budget.

EDIT: i noticed from one of your other posts that your org runs oracle too - did you know SqlSpec supports oracle? (as well as every other major dbms)
