Can someone tell me what a Hypothetical Index is and if it is of any use. When I run sp_helpindex on some tables in one of my SQL 2005 databases, I get lots of hypothetical indexes with a description similar to this:
'nonclustered, hypothetical located on PRIMARY'

Where have these come from? I read a Microsoft article that said they should be dropped but also said they will be named "hind_%". Mine are not. The name always starts "_dta_%".

Thanks Spirit. While I can see what they do and where they are created, the information in BOL is seems a little cryptic as to whether they are needed/used or not.
