I recently upgraded to 2005 from 2000 and i selected the default instance in the setup. I may have selected to wrong selection because after the setup completed SQL 2000 is still install on my server. I can open 2005 management studio and open the database engine but not sure if i am opening the 2000 instance or an upgraded one. Any thoughts.
THanks,

Do a SELECT @@Version via Management Stuidio query analyzer and check the version. If it says 8. something its still 2000, if its 9. something its 2005.

I checked @@version and it still says 2000??? Any ideas. Backup DBs and restore to 2005 after unistalling 2000? They are both installed in the same directory so I am not sure why the upgrade didnt remove 2000. Any ideas on how to get the dbs upgraded from this point. Uninstall/reinstall and make sure I select the named instance instead of default?

Thanks

If you have sql2k5 on the server, just backup db in sql2k and restore it in sql2k5.

Thats my issue, when I open the default instance it is still the SQL 2000 server and no instance for 2005. I thought since I selected default that it would have upgraded it. Unless I am looking in the wrong area???

That is my problem do i upgrade again and have this issue reoccur? I thought i read that upgrading default instance may not always work correctly from 2000 to 2005

Don't know how you did it in first time. Ensure you upgrade sql instance not just client tools.

This exact thing happened to me yesterday and I spen all day figuring it out..

If you can do a system restore to just before you installed 2005.
when this is done. make sure that all services that 2000 is running are closed down (check taks manager) Install 2005 and when it ask you the instance name do not choose the default one. Choose the named one. If you 2000 server is called Server then call the named instance Server1_2005 or somthing.

This should work.

DOnt know if this will help aswell.. but install SP1 and SP2 as soona s you install them or you may have annoying problems with user logins...!

If you cant do a restore just uninstall everthing for 2005.. but you will notice that when you go into enterprise manager 2005 has messed it all up..!

Hope this helps.

Don't need to apply sp1 if you like to go to sp2.
