Check whether instance name has been given or not (for eg if sql express then rknair\sqlexpress).if its also not working then give the port number along with name seperated by a comma...

Did you enable remote access on the server? Is sql server broswer service running? You can find instance name in sql server configuration manager.

To see what the instance name (if it exists) is you would simply go into Administrative Tools and then Services and look for SQL Server and if there is a SQL Server (instancename) then the instance name is in the ( ), otherwise it is the default instance which means that it is simply the machine name.

If there is an instance name, then you would connect with
machinename\instancename as the server name.
