I have recently installed 2005 Standard and 2005 Reporting Services (on a separate server), today we built a service account for the SQL services in Active Directory. I planned to use SQL Configuration tools to change the account but it fails with the message:

'No mapping between account names and security IDs was done'

I ended up going through and following the manual steps outlined in KB article 283811 - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q283811

But I am baffled and concerned as to why it failed.

Any advice?

interesting.. i've never used sscm to do this but isn't there a log where you have more error details? or the event viewer?

Did you add the service account to the server as a local admin?

Does the service account have rights in the SQL Server security as sysadmin?

what's interesting is that the link claims that all those you've mentioned will be done automatically, no script to run, packaged in one neat little box

Yes, I did all of the above. I am not sure what the cause is, everything is working correctly from what I can tell but it is weird that it didn't let me use the config manager to do it. I read articles where others had this problem but without any solutions.
