Hello,I installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and SQL Server Management Studio Express. I am trying to set up merge replication. When I right-click the Replication folder in Object Explorer, the Configure Distribution menu item is not there. Also missing is the New - Publication menu item. All I can do is add New Subscriptions. I am logged in as admin with full priveledges. Am I missing something? Thanks!FYI: I am running Windows XP SP2 and have installed SQL Server 2005 SP2. Thanks again... |

I've seen this on instances where there is a database already involved in replication.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

I haven't set up replication on this machine and I have not yet created any databases. I want to set the machine as the distributor and the publisher, but none of the menus are showing up in SQL Server Management Studio? The only three menu items I have are:-Update Replications Passwords...-New >-RefreshThe only submenu item under the New menu is "Subscriptions...". |

Can you try installing the regular client tools instead of the Express tools?Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

You just install it from the same CD that you have for standard edition. Yes you can install the client tools on XP Pro SP2. That's what I'm running on my laptop.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

I downloaded it from MSDN... I don't see any SQL Server Management Studio regular edition in the package. All I have ever seen is the Express edition of Management Studio. Do you have a link for this? Is it freeware? |

It isn't freeware. Didn't you purchase CAL licenses when you purchased the server license? If so, then you can legally install the client tools from the standard edition CD. In fact, that's all that it will let you install on an XP machine since standard edition requires a server OS.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

I have an MSDN Subscription from which I obtained a copy. It lets me install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on an XP machine, but it won't let me install the management tools. The installer keeps saying something about them already existing on my machine and to set the UPGRADE parameter in the template.ini file?I uninstalled everything and tried again and still get the same error. Even the SQL directories under Program Files have been removed.I notice that after a complete uninstallation the SQL related services are still listed in the Windows Services tool?Is there a tool out there that will actually remove everything SQL related from my machine so that I can do a clean installation? |
