| We would like to apply a hotfix to solve the issue that brought our server down. The hotfix we are trying to apply is in Build 3175. But the latest Cumulative Update 3 Package is Build 3186. Should we apply 3175? Or we can go for the latest build 3186? Which is recommended? |

unless you have a premier support contract with microsoft, you need to call their support line in order to get specific hotfixes. There are also cumulative hotfixes available which can be downloaded directly from microsoft without having to go through PSS. The downside there is that you are going to be applying a lot of fixes to your environment, not just the hotfix for the specific issue you are interested in. Here is a KB article describing all the post SP2 SQL 2005 hotfixes http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937137/en-usThere is some discussion about build 3186 causing problems with the SQL Agent (http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2252756). So if you are deadset on installing a cumulative hotfix, you might just want to stay with build 3175 until this issue is resolved.How do you know this hotfix will fix the problem you experienced?-ec |

| Cumulative hotfix includes all fixes up to that time, you can double check what are fixed in document of the fix. |

| The issue we are experiencing is listed under the Cumulative Update 2. That's why we have decided to go with this hotfix. |

| Fix 3186 includes all fixes in 3175, I went to fix 3186 on my servers since it's publically available and fixes bugs in sp2. |
