Hi,

I had deleted the login and user in my SQL 2005 database. However, each time when i connect to my database using the SQL enterprise manager, I can still see the deleted username under the login. It seems that the username is stored or cache somewhere after the first time that I have login. Does anyone know how to clear it? I am using SQL 2005 authenication method on 2003 Server machine. Thanks.

Regards,

Hi,

There is no refresh at the login. When i refer to the login, i mean the connection window that appears when you select connect to database. If you click at the drop down arrow for the login, you can see all previous username, some of which I had already remove from the login and user inside my database. I would like to know if there is a way to remove these username from the drop down arrow of the login? Thanks.

You can ignore it. It is just the previous login name displayed in your computer. Nobody will be able to login using that deleted username. You don't have to worry about security.

Login using some other valid username. Old login name will disappear the drop drown list.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I understand it is not a security concern but is there a way to remove these previous usernames since it was requested by my customer in one of the project we are doing? I tried looking at all SQL options but there do not seem to be a way. You mentioned ""Old login name will disappear the drop drown list" but i tried with 5 or 6 names and they are still all there though I have deleted 1 or 2 of them.

Is this the type of drop down history list that allows you to DownArrow into it and then press Delete to remove an entry?

Hi Kristen,

It allows you to select the username and delete it but if you select the drop down arrow again, you still see the username, i.e. it was not deleted.

I wasn't meaning deleting the username from the system, I was meaning at the place where the drop down list appears. Can you ArrowDown and press Delete at that point?

Hi Kristen,

Yes I can delete from drop down list when i select it. However, it does not delete it from the drop down list as I can see it when i click on the drop down list again.

Strange because those History ones are not normally additionally populated from elsewhere, just self-contained.

When you select the username in the login drop down list, it becomes a text which is why you can delete, cut or copy it. Basically, we are just deleting the text after selection instead of deleting the login username.

If we do not select the username, then we are unable to delete it.

I just would not find the option to delete all these unwanted username. Maybe it is not an option provided for in SQL 2005.

"When you select the username in the login drop down list, it becomes a text which is why you can delete"

No, that is not what I meant.

Can you press the DownArrow to move into the drop down list of username, and when a "stale" one is highlighted are you then able to press Delete such that it is removed from the list?

If you uninstall and reinstall Client Tools (Management Studio) previous login names may disappear.
Please note I have not tested this.

Or check RegSrvr.xml under C:\Documents and Settings\User_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell if have any cached user there.
