I'm trying to setup SQL Server 2005 Express to communicate through a non standard port. I can connect to SQLServer on a remote machine using port 1433 when it is set as such but when I change the server to another port and try and connect using SSMSE I can't get through. I'm specifying the ip address and a colon followed by port number to connect.

For example: 123.123.123.123:1234

Any ideas?

Should be: 123.123.123.123,1234

Non-standard ports should be greater than 10000 for security reasons.

You could also add an alias so that you don't need to type in the port each time.

Why would making the port > 10,000 make it more secure?

How would I turn 123.123.123.123,1234 into an alias?

Thanks for your help.

Because all lower number port are considered "system ports" and those are scanned first by the evil mob.

Is port a 16 bit integer? If so, is the largest value for a port 2^16 (65536)?

(apologies for going off topic - I realize that ports have little to do with SQL)

Create alias in sql configuration manager on client machine, choose tcp/ip protocol and use ip address as server name.
