The number of data files within a single filegroup should equal to the number of CPU cores. So for a quad core CPU there should be 4 data files. Is there anything that one need to take care besides creating the data files for a filegroup. I belieev SQL takes care of itself how to update data files .

You need to make sure you create each data file with the same file size.

Ok we create the data files of same size . But will autogrowth take care off itself . Just to clarify it will distribute data across datafiles and not duplicate data (thereby not leading to increased storage requirements ) .

When the files are the same initial size the file growth will occur in a round robin fashion.

What do you mean 'duplicate data'? Sql will not store multiple copy of data in those files.
