Hi TRACEYSQL and rmiao,

I have exactly the same problem - connecting to SQL 2000 within SQL 2005 SSMS;
See my post here: http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=96252

Did you manage to fix the problem, and if so, how?

OMG - thanks for the solution - it works here on my machine as well.

I did not set up a linked server - I just connect directly.
Solution: If you're using Windows auth., and login is Administrator and password is 123 on your server, just change your local password for the Administrator-account to 123. Then connect to remote server, while logged in as Administrator on your local pc. And you will be fine.

I think this is a bug in Windows Vista with the Stored Usernames and Passwords.

For domain account, only thing you need to do is adding that account as sql login in sql server.
