 unable to backup to tape drive

i have taken full database backup on tape drive one week ago,by automated scripts ,now when i check the maintenance plan history , it says the task failed and gives a message that unable to open the \\.\tape0 ,with error


([Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000)] Error 3201: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open backup device '\\.\tape0'. Device error or device off-line. See the SQL Server error log for more details.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

in the device manager or the sql manager, does the tape show up as an active device, something might have happened.
e.g. you changed the port. the sql server is pretty unforgiving in the way that you might end up having to reboot the server.

i have two servers where i have to take a backup on tape. one of the two servers displays the tape drive in enterprise manager but the other one does not , i checked in device manager and it does not show any conflicts.(does not show ! or ? ) .. what else could be the issue

Did you install tape driver on that server? Where is the tape device?

ya i find the driver installed for the tape drive in the device manager which shows that the device is working properly.and the location is \\.\tape0 on the server
