Have you read Books Online, the SQL Server help file?

There are several places to look for this type of information. A really good book that I bought and reference quite a bit is "Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - Query Tuning and Optimization". This book covers the properties of a transaction like ACID, Isolation levels and also goes into how transactions are handled, etc.

I also like to suggest to look at the topic of "What's new in SQL Server 2005"... Microsoft generally has a good architecture overview.

I hope this helps!
