Guys,

I have names in the database which I want partition by last name - for example last names starting with A, B, C, D should go to the file group 1. last names starting with E, F, G, H should go to file group 2.

I am trying to use the following function - but do I specify in the function that last names with with A, B, C, D should go to the file group 1

CREATE PARTITION FUNCTION myRangePF3 (char(20))
AS RANGE RIGHT FOR VALUES ('EX', 'RXE', 'XR');

Is there any way to modify partition function to accomplish this?

Any suggestions and inputs would help

Thanks
ALTER PARTITION FUNCTION partition_function_name()
{
SPLIT RANGE ( boundary_value )
| MERGE RANGE ( boundary_value )
} [ ; ]
You should have SQL 2005 enterprise edition for partitioning.

Here you go:

CREATE PARTITION FUNCTION myRangePF3 (char(20))
AS RANGE RIGHT FOR VALUES ('A-D', 'E-h', 'H-Z')

and create partition Scheme and put different partition in different FG and in different disk.

I've implemented sql server partition table. What if i don't have more this ? - Only one disk-, Can i put it on one disk ? because the performance is ok despite only one disk. Any other good idea ?

You can put all partitons on single disk. How big the table is? Really need partition?
