Is it possible to change a 'Default' instance to a unique name?

Am thinking I shouldn't have to re-install SQL 2005?

So the only way to change the instance name is to re-install SQL 2005?

You can setup alias name of Default instances to friendly name if you want. But you need to install second time for named instances

If I run (Maintenance Plan)a full backup of the data and log file.
Reimage the server. Reinstall SQL 2005.

Can I restore the database to a different named instance?

Thanks for the help.

I am loading a clean base server, Windows Server 2003R2.

I will install SQL 2005, creating a unique instance name. I will restore the data to that instance name.

Fingers crossed.

why default doesn't work for you? i mean why you need different name. I think you can change server name to your requirement. Ask your hardware guys , they have more information regarding this?

I will need to change the Instance name as I am working with utilizing a Many-to-1 backup scenario.
On my replication server there will be multiple instances of SQL installed to act as a replication dump for many individual databases.

I didn't get what you meant. What is the requirement?

I will have 4 physical SQL servers that will back up to a single SQL server.

I am using Double-Take 5.0 as the replication (byte-level) service.

You can stop default instance and install 4 named instances.

Yes, but does the server have enough horsepower?

That is not the point. Actually, that wasn't even my question. MY question was answered above if you read the thread.

Thanks anyway.
Kerry

PS - Yes, the server has the horse power, although I will not be adding 16 instance, only 4.
