SQL Server 2008 introduces a TIME data type which allows us to store the time without the date.

I think that this field is useful, but why not add a "Date" type without the time as well? Or do they have such a thing?

Yes they have. And six more types of date datatypes.

what kind of benefits is there to using this date type over the other one?

You said index seek, what does a regular datetime column do when indexed and used in a where clause?
