We are now changing all of our sql logins to be NT Logins via service accounts or by groups etc.

The problem comes when developers say connections can't be made. So i usually end up right clicking studio and putting in the DOMAIN/NT account& password to confirm this.

Anyone got of another way to easily test this that i can give to the developers

You can't input domain\account and password. SSMS and all other apps that use windows authentication use the current security context of the person that is logged in.

What error are they getting?

We will use NT so only use DOMAIN\username when connecting not select sql.

But when i test i right click studio and do run as DOMAIN\Username and put password in (just as if i had login to the network as this user)...then when it says connect as to SQL i say NT.

Sounds you have different kind of ssms, I like to know how. Tried to follow what you said but not even close.

TRACEYSQL, you need to explain in much greater detail as what you have described is not possible Management Studio with Windows authentication. It is not possible to type in Domain\user. Windows authentication means to use the current security context of the person logged into the OS.

So Before launching Studio hold down shift key and do run as
Enter the Domain\Username (this is a group in AD or could be service account).

Then it says enter password which is password in AD.

Once Studio lauches - Then just click NT (which is now running studio as the Domain\Username (no pwd here)

Domain\Username must be in SQL as a NT Login.

For example i log into our domain network as
domain\tracey and i can just click on studio and im using NT authenciation and i choose NT.

But for testing the other domain\users i do not want to log entirely out of the domain and come in as domain\users so im doing the hold shift key and doing run as

Hope that helps clarify......

Basically kind of a long way around to keep testing the domain\users accessibility for tables db etc...

That would be the easiest way to test it then.

Ok, you use run as feature. Agree, no other way is easier.
