I installed SQL 2005 Standard edition on a failover cluster (Windows 2003). It is in production. Vendor wanted Enterprise Edition. What are my options to migrate to Enterprise? Is there an in-place way to do this, or is it a big deal?Vendor probably doesn't need Enterprise. It's a low volume OLTP application with small databases. No fancy stuff (other than the failover clustering). Vendor simply did not test his application on Standard so he says we need Enterprise. Nevertheless, Management will probably want me to make the change.

Find out from the vendor what Enterprise options they are using. If they say none, then using Standard is fine. A vendor should not make you pay for Enterprise edition licenses unless they are using features that are only available in Enterprise edition. There is no easy way to migrate between editions. You must install Enterprise edition and then detach/attach or backup/restore your databases to migrate them.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/Database maintenance routines:http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/archive/2004/07/02/1705.aspx

Thanks, Tara, that's about what I figured.Let's assume that My management has deep pockets, no time to haggle or think, and wants me to conform to the vendor's expectations. Then if I want my clustered named instance (only one on the cluster) to retain the same name, I would need some flavor of uninstall, reinstall process followed by a detach/attach or backup/restore. Correct????

Yes. The easiest way to move between instances is to do the following:1. Stop the SQL Server service2. Copy all of the database files to another location for later use3. Start the SQL Server service4. Uninstall the instance5. Install the instance using the exact same paths as specified in the previous installation6. Stop the SQL Server service7. Copy your saved files back to their original location8. Start the SQL Server serviceBut I highly doubt you can use this method since you are going between different editions.I'd recommend backup/restore as detach/attach doesn't always work.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/Database maintenance routines:http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/archive/2004/07/02/1705.aspx
