I'm having problems with SQL 2005 Express Edition exceeding the maximum memory limit. I hard set the minimum to 100 and the maximum to 500, but the server is currently using over 800MB and is causing the system to page. Has anyone had any experience with similar issues and if so how did you resolve them.

I'm not sure that I understand the question. The sqlserver.exe process is taking 300MB of memory more than the hard limit maximum server memory cap of 500MB that I set.

Isn't the maximum server memory setting supposed to limit the sqlserver.exe process from taking any more memory than that value? If not how can I prevent it? I only have 1GB of Ram in the systems I have this running on and need to prevent SQL from taking any more than half of the physical memory.

Yes it is. As said, you have to check sql's memory usage in perfmon.
