I posted this in the SQL Team Script Library forum, which has a number of examples of functions and stored procedures. It should give you a start.

FWIW, the terms "generic" and "user-defined" functions tend to contradict each other. A generic function will most likely be a regular, pre-defined system function, like GetDate() or ABS(). A user-defined function would be custom-written to provide a function NOT available in the built-in function library.
