Hey all

Hope all's well. I would like to move my SQL DBs to another server. I have two options:

1. Move it to a server that's on the existing domain.
2. Move it to a server that is not within the domain.

I haven't done this before so would like to know what your opinions are in terms of any security issues? My main concern is: If I move it to the one outside the domain, would I be able to access it from outside the domain?

Any other guidance will be highly appreciated!

Many thanks,

Rupa

If you are relying on Windows Authentication then this may be an issue , as far as your existing Windows Authentication users are involved.
If you have SQL Server Authentication - and you can access the server over the network , with correct ports etc , then you should be able to access

Many thanks for that Jack and rmiao. Much appreciated. Meanwhile, if you think of any other issues I need to consider before the move, please do let me know.

Thanks,

considerations before moving:
copy all the database logins to new server:
check and correct for orphaned Logins:
update any linked servers for the Database.
Always use BAckup and Restore to move the File Over.
Before Restore check to see you have the same DRIVE configuration on the New Server.
Check Database DATA File PATH.
Then RESTORE with the WITH MOVE option.
RUN DBCC UPDATEusAGE and DBCC CHECKDB after the move.

After Restoring the databases you have to change the compatability level to 90
