While installing sql server I gave the server instance name as: sqlexpress. Installing went fine but the server name looks like:
SS-31D163E9F756\SQL2005. The code is appended infront.

How can I change the sql server name to whatever name I want. sometimes I also see some servers are accessed using ip address. How would I be able to do that too.

Thanks in advance.

You can't get rid of SS-31D163E9F756 as that's the hostname (or virtual name on clusters) and is required for the name.

But I'm confused. You said you installed it as sqlexpress, however you show it as sql2005. Could you check the services applet or SQL Server configuration manager for the instance name(s)?

You could just create an alias in Config Manager so that you can refer to it as simple as SQL.

sorry my bad...I used "sql2005" as instance name.
I created new alias using configuration manager. while doing that I left port number as blank. Is it ok? Leaving it as blank worked fine. Just curious where would it affect if I leave it blank.

If I want to use an ip address for sql server name instead of specifying a name. can I give any ip number randomly or the ip address of my computer?

A random IP address will error. You shouldn't use IP addresses though. Just use aliases if you don't like your hostname.

The port only matters if you get an error.
