I've got a SQL 2005 machine that I'm trying to get to use more RAM and am having issues. Here's the low down so far:

I've got 12GB of RAM on the machine, I want to set SQL Server to use 4GB.

I've set the /3GB and /PAE switches in the boot.ini.

I'm now looking at the server properties and it shows min memory as 0 and max memory as 2147483647. It will not allow me to increase the max memory size.

I have not enabled AWE because I'd read that you only need to do so when you're trying to access more then 8GB of RAM.

SQL 2005 Standard SP2 on Windows Server 2003 Standard

Thoughts?

Did you read the article I linked to in your last post? PAE means nothing without AWE enabled.

You need awe when you're trying to access memory above 4gb range.

Yes.

Also, why did you buy 16GB of RAM if you don't want to address more than 8GB?

Finally, the memory properties are in MB. Do you know how many GB 2147483647 MB equates to?

Pootle,

This is the first post I've made on this board so I'm not sure what article you're referring to, but thanks for the info about the /PAE switch. Also, I believe the max memory property is in bytes not MB so the 2147483647 is 2 GB. As for why I have a server with 16 GB of RAM that I only want to address 4 GB its more a question of understanding. Right now I can't get it to see anything above the 2 GB so if I can get it to see more then that then I'll set it to a value that makes sense for the system. I wanted to start with 4 GB to see how that affects the system and then move up from there. It has other applications on it as well that I don't want to adversely affect.

Do I need to enable AWE to see anything above 2 GB? Am I missing something?

Thanks for your help.

Beg your pardon - I thought you were this guy (your issue is really similar!):
http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=107424

The article I link to is a super guide, and I've given a synopsis of the major points.

I think most of the problems in your first post are addressed, and your new question is covered in the link(s). The max memory is in MB and clearly labelled as such - look at it again.

See how you get on & feedback.
