On my production SQL Server - i see a paging file of 18 GB used. But my initial paging file is set to 2 GB minimum and a max file size is of 4 GB. i was wondering, how can it grow to 18 GB? Is task manager not a relevant source to rely on?

Any reason why my paging file is so large on SQL Server? The server is with 22 GB memory and 18 is allocated to SQL Server. Additionally i could see 2 GB of memory available on the box as well.

any suggestions?

Are you confusing the swap file with memory?

SoDeep: It's SQL 2005-Enterprise edition.

tkizer: My question was - why do i see high paging file on my task manager when initially i have only allocated 2 to 4 GB as max. For sure, I am not confusing myself with swap and memory. any suggestions as to why i see this?

Have you tried viewing the page file size in Performance Monitor so that you can compare the number with what Task Manager is showing?

I checked with the performance monitor and see the following values:

Paging file %Usage - C:\Pagefile.sys value is 17%
Paging file %usage Peak - C:\pagefile.sys value is like 32%

does these values means, the file %usage is 17% and %usage peak was 32%? I.E 17% of the 4 GB page file?

Sounds it set to system managed size, and 18gb page file is normal on server with 22gb memory.
