| Hello All,We are moving our Database from SQL Server 7.0 runningon NT 4.0 to SQL Server 2000 on Win2K. What are thenecessary steps to migrate data? This will be done from a sever running on NT 4.0 to a Server running on Win2K.Any input will be highly appreciated.Thanks.--Sissi |

| Sissi,This is usually not a complex operation. DTS can be used, as well as BCP. From your post I can't discern if you're asking for info on specific pitfalls, or just asking generally.Another issue to consider is how best to take advantage of the feature set new in SQL 2K. You might find aspects of your 7.0 schema unnecessary or inefficient in 2K due to features such as computed columns or materialized views.If you're looking for a professional evaluation feel free to email me through SQLTeam; I'd be glad to take a look.Jonathan Boott, MCDBA{0} |

Thanks for your reply. I am actualy looking for any pitfall or issuesthere might be..Also, I was thinking of backing UP the DB on SQL 7.0 and restore on SQL 2000. Is that a good idea?Thanks.quote:

| That works fine. The only real pitfall is orphaned users. You will need to migrate your logins via DTS after you restore, and then run my script (Which you can find in the Scripts forum). It will repair your orphaned users.Search these forums for migration topics, it is well covered.-Chad |
