| Guys, A few questions on a Microsoft SQL 2000/Win2Kserver Replication/Stnadby solution. 1 - In term of Hardware configurations, does standby solution require the EXACT SAME Hardware configuration? Is there anything one should know? 2 - What would be the best solution to have a second server in case of failover, crash...? What are the advantages of SQL Failover Support / Clustering Service over Standby server? Your input will be highly appreicated, Many thanks, -- Sissi Malek |

No. Just make sure your standby is robust enough to handle the load...quote: 2 - What would be the best solution to have a second server in case of failover, crash...? What are the advantages of SQL Failover Support / Clustering Service over Standby server?
Depends on your budget... Clustering Service will fail over automatically as soon as a node goes down, and the server name will not change. So it you have less potential downtime, and no manual intervention required. However, clustering is expensive! Standby server, you have to bring online manually (you will probably need to restore some logs, rename the server (or reconfigure application so that it points to standby instead of the primary). So there is more potential downtime, but the cost is significantly lower. |

| Thanks for your input. Is clustering service part of SQL Server 2000, or this is a feature on top of it and you have to pay extra to get it?Thanks again. |
