Since the hotfixes contain the same filenames contained in SP2, can you replace the matching files in SP2 with the updated ones from hotfixes?

Also, if you can do that, can you apply SP2 to a SQL Server distribution directory?

With the hotfixes there's ussualy (always) a "readme" file with instructions for use. You should read it!

What do you want to do with the SP2 in the distribution directory?

I READ THE README FILE...GEEZ!

I can post the whole readme file but I assure you there is nothing mentioned about copying files from the hotfix into SP2 package or SQL setup distro folder. Just how to install it on your system.

As for the second question, I want to apply the service pack to my SQL Server 2000 distribution directory, similiar to Windows 2000 service packs apply to Windows 2000 distribution directories. As in, when new servers are built they automatically have SP2 w/hotfixes installed.

Unless you're feeling brave, or have the ability to fix any problems that might come up, I'd recommend following MS's procedures on applying hotfixes to the letter. They're already a pain in the ass to work with, and there's nothing that says they should be (or forces them to be) made easier to install.

I HAVE heard from several people who played with a hotfix and ended up needing to reinstall the OS in order to get everything back to normal. This was a while ago and may have been SQL 7.0, but you get the idea. If MS doesn't have any documentation on how to do what you want to do, I think you'd be safer just following their directions only. At least that way you can call them up and say "I FUBAR'd my server by following YOUR directions!"
