| Sharon writes "We are planning on using two servers, one for production and one as a standby server. I was told that we only needed one license since the standby server wasn't actually in use. I was told by someone else that the license could only be transferred from the production server to the standby server once. Which means that once the production server is up and running again, we can't use it without getting another license. Does anyone have a definite answer as to how many licenses we would need? We contacted a Microsoft rep, but she wasn't sure. If anyone is using standby servers, could you let me know how you've handled the licensing issue? Thanks." |

| To be safe you probably need the standard license but no CAL's although a per processor license would be a bit expensive. Are you a MSDN subscriber? What level? At any point in time you could allocate the non production server, ie the one that is not online the development server license. All this would depend on whether you have an OEM license for your production server (rare for SQL I would guess) as it would then be linked to the hardware. If not you can move the licenses between machines as much as you like. |
