Hi all,

I've been using Management Studio Express 2005 and am finding that the repsonse times for doing things like copying and pasting code and generally using is very slow indeed, it seems to think about every action you do- this is true of the local version i run or the version i dial into directly on the server.

any ideas? the query running speed is absolutely fine just the rep[snse time of mouse actions...its driving me nuts and is rendering the application unusable...

cheers

Do you have any add-ins installed?
What takes long time to copy and paste?

its the full 'advanced' install with everything that comes with.

it can take 10-20 seconds to paste 5 lines of code...

you said you are dialling into the server to do this?

Do you mean some sort of remote desktop connections / citrix / etc?

Or did you mean that you'd set up enterprise manager on your local machine but had connected to a foreign database server through that.

We have to connect to one of our clients using citrix and I have come across behaviour as you describe. It's not sql server causing the slowdown, it's cirtix metaframe.

Hi -- just reread your posts and saw it happens locally for you as well.

which service pack are you using? SP 3 seems to be huge improvement over sp 2.

ive tried both, the method im using at the momemht is the client install of manager with a connection to a foreign database and yes we do use citrix- thinking it may well be that- did you have a work around as im not always going to be able to work on the server directly

Sorry -- The metaframe server and client isn't maintained by my company and we are required just to use their tools and only their tools. It is very annoying when I have to perform any sort of ad hoc stuff on there.

Just like you -- the server is perfectly quick (quad opteron running 2003) but dialling into it is very very slow.

If you get a solution -- I'd be interested in how you fix it.

2008 suffers from the same problem and this is rather a big issue- i will have to go back to enterprise manager although im not sure its compatible with 2005

Nope. You can't use EM to manage a 2005 server

didn't think so, and this is the rub- ive just found out that the actual server is 2000 (ive been locked out of accessing the actual server until now) so ive been using 2005 managements studio to control a link to a 2000 server.

ive managed to get access to dial straight in now so problem solved.

cheers
