Can I restore a master db from the backup file?
Restore the master.bak to a different instance.

This is not simple. You want to avoid this.

Yes, I tried this one. It didn't work for different instance. :-(
Well, what I want to see from the master db is one of the user stored-procedure was lost from master db. Try get it from master.bak file.

Restore master to a machine that has the same paths available as the old one.
