We have our MDF file whose size changes each day.
I mean the available free space in the shrink file dialog changes each day.

some day it shows, 11% remaining, some day 28% remaining.

what is the reason for this.

DB : SQL 2005 (64 bit) on Windows 64 bit.

we had just migrated to Win 2003 64 bit.

The size isn't changing.
The figures for used / unused space inside the mdf file is changing.
That is depending on inserted or deleted records in some tables.

So do you have a problem?

thanks for the reply.

problem is we are running short of physical hard disk space.

though we can move to other options.

however this behaviour is strange.

earlier before change of win 2003 64 bit edition.
there was no such dynamic change.

we just want to know why there is so much variance.

is there we can do anything to arrest this.

I don't think it is strange, because a database isn't static in use of space.
Or would you say that there are no inserts/updates/deletes on your database?

You've moved to a new server? or a new installed version of Windows / SQL?

Possibly scheduled tasks set up differently / scheduled for different times to before?

Server is same, however earlier we had 32 bit and now it is 64 bit OS.
Some Observations

1) When it was 32 bit, data file size used to not change at this rate.

Below are some statistic, here 14 mean 14th July 2010 (day wise) : Size in MB

14 15 16 17 19 20 20 21
Allocated Space 117305 117305 117305 117305 131305 131305 131305 131305
Avaliable Free Space 13738 23788 25310 33929 34708 6586 36801 40156
Actual Data size 103567 93517 91995 83376 82598 124720 94504 91149

from above it is clear that, the actual data size in between increases and on 20th July suddenly increases.

seeing this pattern , can anyone comment about this strange behavior.

Also there is no such addition to the content from user's end.
