| Hi, I have 100 GB dedicated to my Production Server. Data file, Mdf is about 23GB, I retain 12 hours log backup (10 gb) + 2 (noon & nightly) full backup files (38 gb) on the disk which leave me with 33 GB free space. I have noticed my database grew by 4 GB in past 6 months. Right now I have about 40 users and i will have 9000 in next 2 years. Not only will the number of users multiply, but also we will be adding new applications on the database. What I need is your thoughts on planning a server upgrade! Where to look and how to determine server specifications? q2: if i do a dbcc shrinkdatabase, i see the ldf is shrunk but should it also shrink mdf? Thanks,Sarat. |

| A1: You might consider looking into SAN technology for this. We use Compaq's solution: EVA. A2: Also try DBCC SHRINKFILE. Shrinking a database can only occur if there is free space in it. It does not compress it.TaraEdited by - tduggan on 03/06/2003 17:00:48 |
