 ".." standin for schema?

I was reviewing some view definitions that are supposed to be working, and in the From clause they have names in this format:

dbname..tablename

Shouldn't that be
dbname.dbo.tablename

The schema for all these tables is dbo.

??

I just tried it and both ways work.

It's a shorthand for dbo, left over from the Sybase days. It's probably better to put and explicit dbo in there if you can.
