Does anyone know if it is safe to move a database from
a 2005 SP3 instance to a 2005 SP2 instance?

Yes, I know I should be applying SP4 everywhere, but this is a production environment and we have extra red tape for that kind of thing. It would be a lot quicker to just take a backup here, and restore it there.

SP4 doesn't exist yet.

I don't think restore supports going down level from SP3 to SP2.

I would say that this is unsafe though as the minimum build for production SQL Server 2005 servers should be 4262, which is SP3 + last October's critical security hotfix.

Databases created in SQL 2005 SP3 will restore just fine to SP2 installations.

That said, I agree with Tara that you should upgrade ASAP
